Trevor Wood conquered high winds last Sunday (22nd May) when he won the Gaydon Trophy which was presented to the Club back in 1963 by the Officers and Men of RAF Gaydon.

Trevor, who chairs the Club’s General Committee, displayed his recovery skill to good effect collecting 40 stableford points holding off challenges from Mark Hepburn 37, John Fennell 35, and John Reeder 35.

Mark Hepburn’s gross 76 won the Lockheed Rosebowl for the best gross score.

David Robinson, Barry Enock, Andrew Osborne, Toby Clowes, Jamie Goode, Ian Fleming, Sam Turner and Niall Potter all qualified for the Galloway Cup Knock-out singles competition by being the first home in the Griffin Bowl.

David Robinson (82-16-66) won the Bowl by 2 shots from Barry Enock (83-15-68) and Andrew Osborne (83-15-68).  Jamie Goode took the scratch prize with 69 on the Par 72 course.

Hole in One!

Maxtoke Park member Graham, playing against Gerry Robbins and Roger Garratt, scored a memorable Hole in One at the short 11th in the recent inter-club Nags match. His accurately struck tee shot proved to be perfectly placed on arrival at the green and moved him to three up in the match. Sadly his partner Gareth had had to retire hurt at the ninth, with a bad back, and so with careful and persistent play Gerry and Roger gradually clawed back the three hole deficit to win the match with a birdie three on the last hole.

CAPTAIN’S NEWSLETTER – MAY 2011

 Dear Members,

It has just been over a month since being elected to office and taking over the helm from Tony Partridge.  What a month it has been, with the weather being warm and sunny, greens running fast and praying for overnight rain.

The playing season is well under way with Men’s, Ladies and Junior Competition’s together with the Mixed Open being played this weekend.  Before we know it the Town Bowl and other competitions will be behind us, how time flies.

Both Des Bowen(vice-captain) and myself have been kept very busy interviewing new members, with more to follow.  A testament to the hard work made in promoting the club through our open day held recently.  Another open day is earmarked for late September.

In October 2010 the Equality Act became law.  This affects all golf clubs.  A small working group has been set up to look at this and further details can be seen on the notice boards and on the web-site.

Plans are in hand to improve the ladies and gents locker rooms.  No firm details are yet available, but once known I will keep you all informed.

Finally, the Captains’ Charity this year is the Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance, with events at the end of June and beginning of July.  Jan Lloyd and I have been working hard to make these events as successful as ever.  All the Charity Events are published in the club diary and we hope as many of you as possible will support us with your generosity.  Donations to the Bottle Raffle to be held on the Charity Fun Afternoon (2/7) would be much appreciated.

So far, so good,  a brief newsletter, but I do hope that the weeks ahead are kind to us and that all members, both old and new, enjoy their golf at the club, and I would like to re-enforce a comment I made at the AGM. “Leamington is a golf club for members, and not just a place to play golf.”  I believe there is a difference.

JUNIOR EASTER COMPS,

Wow what a busy Easter!

Lewis won the Easter Medal and Stan the Easter Stableford. We put on two extra competitions and on Saturday George Hawkes won the Stableford with 41pts. All four players scored 41pts on the day and had they been allowed in the adult competition we would of finished 1 2 3 4!
Joe Wright continued his incredible weekend form and shot a net 68 today in really windy conditions.

The team played away at Stratford on Sunday and we lost the match 4-2 with Liam making a winning return after breaking his wrist. The lads know that this is going to be a tough year but a good time WILL be had by all. Stick in there lads, the food is worth the trip alone!

Overall Easter was a great success for the Juniors. Most of you had significant handicap cuts and are regularly putting in cards. George Hawkes is the current Leamington World Record Holder, losing 14 strokes over the holiday period. Well done George, it can only get harder from here!

We are now on Twitter! If you are one of those who follow the stars then you can also look up @leamjuniorgolf for the odd tweet. I need all the followers i can get, so look us up at www.twitter.com

I represent the Junior section on the general committee and several senior members remarked on how much they were impressed with the general conduct of our junior members on the course, so well done. Remember, keep your shirts tucked in, your lips sealed, avoid slow play and you can’t go far wrong!

 Keep swinging

Ian
