Leamington and County has a very active ladies’ section. Gill Thorpe is our current Ladies’ Captain. With around 120 playing ladies, sporting handicaps ranging from 1 to 36, we hold competitions on a Tuesday – medals and stablefords, together with team and fun events. We also have the alternative day of Saturday for medals and stableford competitions. During the main playing season we hold knock out competitions. The ladies also play social golf on other days.
Leamington and County ladies play matches against other clubs. The Scratch League, Inter Club League, friendly matches and mixed matches give ladies the opportunity to play at all levels. A summer Greensome Mixed in house League and matches against the Nags again broaden the playing opportunities.
We also like playing golf on other courses so a great number of ladies play in Open events around the Midlands. We then welcome other players to our own Open Tournaments. There are also groups who venture further afield for golfing holidays, both in this country and abroad.
With golf at the heart of our activities we also arrange other events. Each year we support a particular charity which enables us to enjoy ourselves and raise funds for worthwhile causes. This year Gill’s charity is Dogs for the disabled. We hold coffee mornings for the ladies, fun evenings, including a Skittles Evening, Rules Night and more. Two of the highlights of the ladies’ year are the Ladies’ Captain’s Day and the Ladies’ Captain’s Away Day when ladies go by coach to a different golf course, often in a different county. The year ends with our AGM held early November.
The Ladies’ Coaching Scheme is in its 6th year and, coupled with the Apprentice membership category, we have a good number of very keen new ladies joining our section and enriching our playing. With fantastic support from the more experienced members the handicaps of our new ladies are dropping fast!
