The full details may be found on pages 11 and 12 in the last edition of Rules presented by Royal Insurance. Basically they are commonsense rules to ensure that all golfers may play with unnecessary problems on a course in the best condition and therefore should be observed by all golfers.

  • Make sure it is safe to play before striking the ball. Do not move, talk or stand close to or directly behind the ball or hole when a player is addressing or making a stroke.
  • Play without delay but not until the players in front are out of range.
  • Players searching for a ball should not search for five minutes allowed before a ball has to be deemed lost before calling the following players through if it apparent that the ball will not be easily found; and wait until they are out of range before continuing to play.
  • Leave the putting green immediately a hole has been completed; no practicing the putt again.
  • A single player has no standing and should always give way to a match. Two ball matches have precedence over, and should be allowed to pass any 3 or 4 ball matches, provided there is enough space ahead to allow continuity of play. Two, three and four balls have equal standing on Saturdays and Sundays.
  • If there are no tee reservations indicated by the notice board matches starting a round must alternate with matches starting their second nine holes.
  • Fill up and smooth over all holes and footprints made in a bunker before leaving it.
  • Ensure that any turf cut or displaced is replaced at once and press down; repair damage caused to a putting green made by a ball; repair damage caused by golf shoe spikes on completion of the hole.
  • Do not take trolleys on to any tee or green, do not walk with them between a bunker and the green or take them across yellow lines or other markings in front greens.
  • Do not carry a bag over a green.
  • Always take trolleys around any roped-off area.
  • Do not put golf bags down on greens or damage the greens with the flagstick or by leaning on a putter; remove the flagstick or attend it from as far away from the hole as practical.
