Winning Walker Cup member Andy Sullivan
On Wednesday 2nd November Leamington & County Golf Club held its inaugural Winter Open during a bright and breezy early winter’s day. The event was well supported by a near full field including members, visitors and professionals such as winning Walker Cup member Andy Sullivan and former Ryder Cup star Paul Broadhurst.
The first shot was struck at 8am whose group included our 2011 club Captain Phil Halford and club manager David Beck. The event was then alternated off both tee’s which was ably started by club member Pete Bench up until 10am.
The course was in fantastic condition which was reflected in the early scores as Nuneaton Professional Andy Sullivan carded a five under par front nine, including a drive to 4 feet on the par 4 18th resulting in an eagle two. That wasn’t the only excellent shot during the day’s play with an eagle two on the par 4 6th hole and an albatross two on the par 5 9th!
Leamington Amateur Bernard Kirwan was to set an early 18 hole target with 41 points, however Sullivan was still to complete his back nine and later responded with 41 points of his own, a magnificent seven under par gross and just beating Kirwan on a back nine count back.
After the scores had been finalised the presentation took place in the main lounge with the winners collecting their just rewards for a fine day’s play. The final standings can be seen on the attached document.

Excellent days like these, remain scarce.
Blessed with fine, mild autumnnal weather (albeit rather windy) the course maintained the very good condition members have enjoyed all summer. Very well done to Jason and his team.
And what a privilege to have Ryder & Walker Cup players enjoying our course because they wanted to be there!
Julian Mellor, Lee Brotherhood and others should be heartily congratulutated for their unstinting efforts in making the day such a success.
